Cuban woman taken into custody during raid to be deported

-

A Cuban woman who admitted to overstaying her permit in Guyana, was on Friday fined and ordered deported to her country of origin.

It was alleged that Dailyn De La Garidad Garcia, on February 5, 2019, at Georgetown, failed to comply with conditions; that is to say, having been permitted to stay in Guyana from December 28, 2018 to January 28, 2019, she overstayed the said period.

Police prosecutor Sanj Singh, informed Magistrate Leron Daly that Garcia legally entered the country via the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri on December 28, 2018, where she was given a one-month stay permit.

However, on February 5, 2019, ranks from the Trafficking in Persons Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department, conducted a raid exercise, where they came into contact with Garcia. She was asked to produce her passport. It was then observed that Garcia had overstayed her permit and she admitted that she never applied for or was never granted an extension of the stay.

Garcia was then fined $30,000 or ordered to serve a default sentence of six months in jail, after which she would be deported to Cuba.
