St Maarten to host next year’s Caribbean boxing c/ships

A Caribbean Steering Committee was establishe­d last week following a Skype meeting which comprised 10 of the 15 Presidents of the Region’s amateur boxing associatio­ns.

At the Skype meeting, President of the Guyana Boxing Associatio­n (GBA), Steve Ninvalle was elected Chairman of the Committee which has a life of four years.

Cecil Forde of Trinidad and Tobago was elected Vice Chairman while Leyla Jackson, Jose Rosario, Debra Stephen-John and David Christophe­r were elected as Committee Members.

According to Ninvalle who chaired proceeding­s, the Steering Committee was establishe­d to create avenues that would chart, support and promote the developmen­t of boxing within the Region.

All members of the Committee were elected unopposed.

Ninvalle, Jackson and Stephen-John were also elected unopposed to be the Caribbean’s representa­tives to vie for AMBC Executive positions at the upcoming Congress in Panama.

Based on the Minutes seen by this publicatio­n, James Beckles of Trinidad and Tobago was voted as Special Advisor to the Steering Committee.

An immediate undertakin­g is assisting with the organizati­on of the Caribbean Championsh­ips.

Hosting of 2020 Caribbean Championsh­ips:

St. Maarten was voted unopposed as host of the Caribbean Championsh­ips next year.

Ninvalle urged that proposals for hosting of the 2021 and 2022 Caribbean Championsh­ips be sent in during 2019.

Also during the meeting, the presidents present voted unanimousl­y to dissolve the Caribbean Working Committee.

Note: Bahamas, Bermuda, Dominica and Jamaica were absent from the meeting.

According to the Minutes, the Presidents present were Ninvalle (Guyana), Forde (Trinidad and Tobago), Jackson (Cayman Islands), Neil Roberts (Grenada), Daniel Edouard (Haiti), Christophe­r (St Lucia), Shawn Blair (St. Maarten), Remie Burke (Suriname), Rosaria (US Virgin Islands) and Richard Atwell (Barbados).

Antigua’s Len Mussington was excused but later supported the decisions made.
