Exciting semi-final matches billed for today
—Cadogan, Gomes, Verwey, Alphonso all advance in annual Bounty Farm handicap tourney
An exciting evening of Squash yesterday at the Georgetown Club Squash Court, saw the semi-finalists of this year’s Guyana Squash Association (GSA) Annual Bounty Farm Handicap Tournament being decided.
First to register spots in the semis were the sensational duo of Abosaide Cadogan and Kirsten Gomes who registered contrasting category ‘A’ triumphs.
Cadogan, in her quarter final match, defeated Lajuan Munroe 15-11, 15-13 while Gomes (-1) nudged her way past Lucas Jonas 2-1 in a much tougher encounter. Gomes took the first 15-12 before Jonas manufactured a 15-4 second set win.
It was Gomes, however, who clinched the pivotal third set 15-11 to secure her spot in today’s semis.
Gomes will now face the defending champion Michael Alphonso, who waltzed his way into the semifinal with an impressive performance against Zachary Persaud (7) who had a decent handicap.
Alphonso, who began the match at negative 10, won 15-12, 15-12.
The other semis will see Cadogan coming up against the vastly improved and easy-going Nicholas Verwey (4), who put on clinic against Demetrius De Abreu to take the match 15-10, 15-5.
There were no surprises in the Open quarterfinal matches which saw Alex Arjoon (-16) displaying his superior fitness to book his semi-final spot with a 15-9, 15-4 win over Damien Da Silva. Arjoon will now play Steven Xavier (-10), who defeated Adam Alves (5) 1511, 15-13.
The other quarterfinal matches saw Regan Pollard (-8) muscling his way past Ashley Khalil 15-12, 15-14 in what was the most evenly matched and entertaining tussle of the evening.
Pollard will face Deje Dias (-10) in today’s semis after the latter’s 13-12, 15-9 win over Ingram Edwards (8)2 last evening. (Royston Alkins)
