Schlumberger seeks EPA approval to store dry chemicals

-

International oilfield service provider Schlumberger has applied to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for authorisation to store dry chemicals.

According to an EPA Notice to the Public, which was published on Sunday, the agency has received eight applications for Environmental Authorisation from various companies, including Schlumberger Guyana Inc.

The Notice said Schlumberger is seeking authorisation for the storage of dry chemicals at 24-26 Industrial Site, Ruimveldt.

Meanwhile, it also noted that the Ministry of Public Infrastructure is seeking permission for the rehabilitation of the Linden-Soesdyke Highway.

Additionally, it noted that Rosemond Kim Carroll and Cherryl Williams are seeking permission to construct a Sand Mine at 10 Miles, Bartica, Potaro Road, in Region Seven.

The notice said too that WH Mining Inc., and Dexter Charles, of Elicha Investment and Construction Inc. and of Royal Palm Estate Inc., are seeking permission to construct quarries.

WH Mining Inc. is seeking to have the quarry at Quarry Top, Port Kaituma, while Charles is interested in having three at Moraballi River Area, Essequibo River; Carbadanni Creek Area, Demerara River; and at Tarpe Falls, Mazaruni River.

In accordance with Section 11 (2) of the Environmental Protection Act, the application for each proposed project has been screened by the EPA to assess its potential environmental impacts and it has been determined that they will not significantly affect the environment, and are therefore exempt from the requirement of an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).

However, in keeping with the Act, and the Environmental Protection (Authorisations) Regulations, 2002, any person who may be affected by the projects may lodge an appeal against the Agency’s decision with the Environmental Assessment Board within 30 days of the publication of the notice.

Details on the procedure for submission of appeals can be obtained from the EPA’s website – epaguyana.org – or at its Ganges Street, Sophia, office.
