The Guyana Football Federation [GFF] has intensified training for several Caribbean Football Union [CFU] and CONCACAF ournaments.

This was revealed by way of a press release from the GFF. According to the correspondence, Guyana is to compete in six tournaments.

They are the CONCACAF Women’s U20 Qualifiers [July 13th -21st] on local shores, Men’s U23 Olympic Qualifiers Preliminary Round [home & away match from July 17th-21st], CFU Girl’s Under-14 Championship in the Dominican Republic [August 1st-12th], CONCACAF U15 Boys Championship [August 4th-12th] at the IMG Academy in Florida, the CONCACAF U17 Women’s Championship [August 21st-25th] and the CFU Boys U14 in September.

Preparation for the respective tournaments commenced in May via weekly training sessions at the GFF National Training Centre, Providence. The players were selected from the various Academy Training Centres [ATCs] and other scouting activities.

Bryan Joseph, GFF Youth Development Officer said, “The preparation is taking the form of two weekly sessions for all the youth teams utilizing week days from 16:00hrs – 18:00hrs and weekends when available for an additional two hours.”

“We have been implementing or applying the new strategy relative to how we prepare national teams so we’re not doing short, compressed preparation anymore. We’re doing preparation over a longer period. While the number of sessions do not increase, what increases is the period of time that we are actually spending in preparing the groups”, Joseph added.

“We haven’t yet been able to confirm the staff for the various groups even though respective individuals have been identified and have been working with the various groups. There is some overlapping taking place but as we get closer to tournament date and encampment, we’ll finalize the respective staff,” said Joseph.

The respective provisional squads for the event will be announced shortly. Guyana has been drawn in group-A in the CONCACAF Women’s U20 Qualifiers alongside Bermuda, Antigua and Barbuda, Suriname and St. Lucia.

Matches are scheduled for the National Track and Field Centre, Leonora (Guyana) and Warner Park, St. Kitts & Nevis.
