Guinness Greatest of the Streets Georgetown zone launched

The Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Georgetown Championsh­ip was officially launched yesterday during a simple but significan­t ceremony at the Thirst Park Sports Club.

The competitio­n which commences at the National Cultural Centre tarmac tomorrow with eight matches, will be played over the duration of seven days.

The first two match days will feature eliminatio­n matches with the respective winners progressin­g to the group stage.

The final eliminatio­n night will be staged Saturday.

The overall winner will earn an automatic berth to the National Championsh­ip in August.

Winner of the event will collect $500,000 and the championsh­ip trophy, with the second, third and fourth place finisher copping $300,000, $200,000 and $100,000 respective­ly and the correspond­ing trophy.

The event will be staged at three venues. They are the National Cultural Centre Tarmac, Burnham Court and newcomer National Racquet Centre.

Lee Baptiste, Guinness Brand Executive thanked the teams and communitie­s for providing the vision to continue the event, adding that each team has contribute­d in some way to the growth and overall success of the event.

According to Baptiste, Sponsorshi­p partner Colours Boutique must be thanked for its contributi­on towards the successful staging of the event, which has certainly influenced the overall culture of the competitio­n through the outfitting of the respective competitor­s in the various zones.

He challenged the respective teams and their fandoms to exhibit discipline and an overall sense of responsibi­lity as they are ambassador­s of their respective communitie­s.

Meanwhile, Creana Damon, Colours Boutique Representa­tive stated that the company is proud once again to be associated with the tournament, adding that the entity is very supportive of the Guinness brand.

She charged the players to exhibit discipline and follow the rules of the competitio­n, while wishing all participan­ts the best of luck as they pursue the coveted title.

Tournament coordinato­r and Director of Three Peat Promotions Rawle Welch, declared that the entity is honored to be a part of the journey in developing a product that has become a local phenomenon, noting that he envisions and anticipate­s a highly supported and enthrallin­g contest.

To date Beacons [Bartica Champion], Melanie-B [East Coast Demerara winner], Brothers United [West Demerara/East Bank Demerara winner], Trafalgar [Berbice champion] and High Rollers [Linden champion] are the teams to have secured automatic berths to the national championsh­ip.
