Guyana U17s searching for first win in final match

-

The Guyana under-17 cricket team will look to cap off their disappointing Cricket West Indies “Future Stars” U17 Regional tournament with a victory when they come up against the Leeward Islands today at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy ground.

Guyana’s pathetic displays have seen them condemned to the bottom-ofthe-table following up their losses to Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados in the opening rounds with defeats at the hands of Windward Islands and Jamaica respectively.

Guyana were blown away in an 85-run defeat to Windward Islands in a rain-affected contest. At Gilbert Park, Windwards batted first, posting 126-6 when rain interrupted the contest and forced the match to be reduced to a 25 overs affair. Guyana was set a revised target of 150 but struggled to keep up with the scoring rate, eventually closing on 65-7. Chaitram Balgobin top scored with 27 not out including three sixes and one four.

Against Jamaica, their batting once again imploded for 99 in a chase of just 105 to hand the Islanders their first victory over Guyana since 2014 at this level. Jamaica won the toss and elected to bat where they were reduced to 38-4 after 10 overs.

They eventually posted 104 all out with useful contributions from Captain Sanjay Walker, 16, the top score while Brandon English, 14, S. Thompson, 12 and Steve Wedderburn, 11.

Skipper, Sheldon Charles ripped through the top order and eventually ended with 4-26 while Sarwan Chaitnarine snapped up three late wickets.

In the chase, Guyana lost Ajay Gainda for a third ball duck and Mavindra Dindyal for two but Matthew Nandu and Marvan Prashad consolidated with a 23-run stand.

Nandu departed for 13 and Prashad soon followed for just six.

Zeynul Ramsammy resisted with an unbeaten 23 but found little support apart from Niran Bissu with 12.

English, Wedderburn and J. Bartley took two wickets each.
