Four held for Zeelugt chopping murder

Speaking to Stabroek News yesterday afternoon, Commander of ‘D’ Division Edmond Cooper said that the police arrested two more persons in the morning bringing the tally of those in custody to four. He said that the suspects have been cooperating with the police and admitted to the brutal attack on the two brothers. The police will be preparing files to be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions for advice and then the suspects will be prepared to be processed through the courts.

Cooper said that Seenarine is still a patient at the West Demerara Regional Hospital but is recovering.

Gajraj and Seenarine’s sister, Meera, had told Stabroek News that her two brothers were imbibing at her residence until sometime around 10 pm when Seenarine decided he wanted to go home.

Gajraj left with him and while the two men were on a bicycle exiting the village, three men, who Meera said worked with the brothers on a fishing boat, attacked them. She said that the men were armed with a crowbar, a large piece of wood and a cutlass.

Right before they were attacked, Seenarine attempted to run away but ended up slipping and falling into a drain, where he was attacked by one of the men, who even tried to drown him. While Seenarine was being attacked, Gajraj managed to run towards the sea wall but was followed by two of the men. He was then beaten and chopped to death.

“They mean to kill them and Shameer lucky he didn’t dead too,” Meera had said. Gajraj’s body was picked up and rushed to the Leonora Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. His brother had earlier been rushed to the hospital and remains a patient of the West Demerara Regional Hospital.

The woman believes that the attack was premeditated since neighbours related that the three men were waiting on the brothers. But she is unsure whether they wanted to attack them both or just one of them.
