Mother of two succumbs almost two weeks after being hit by car
A 27-year-old mother of two succumbed at a city hospital on Wednesday morning, 11 days after she was struck down by a car while crossing the Chateau Margot, East Coast Demerara (ECD) Public Road.
Dead is Samantha Samaria Seecharan, of Pigeon Island, ECD.
Stabroek News understands that the accident occurred around 9 pm on July 19th, after which Seecharan was picked up in an unconscious condition and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH).
She was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on life-support. She succumbed there around 2.15 am on Wednesday. Seecharan had never regained consciousness.
An autopsy showed that she died as a result of multiple injuries.
The driver of the car was taken into custody and released on station bail after 72-hours.
While details surrounding the accident remains vague, the dead woman’s widower, Surendra Goourdat, yesterday related to Stabroek News that based on what he was told, Seecharan had just disembarked a minibus and was crossing the road when she was allegedly struck down by the car, which was proceeding on the wrong way along the road.
At the time of the accident, Seecharan was heading home from work at the S&S Supermarket, located at Lusignan, ECD, where she worked as a cashier.
Goourdat explained that after Seecharan did not return home on the evening of July 19th, he realised something was amiss since she would not normally stay out without informing him.
He said he then contacted several family members and friends of Seecharan but got no clues as to her whereabouts.
The following morning, he said, he went to the Beterverwagting Police Station to file a missingperson report.
While providing the ranks with Seecharan’s description, Goourdat said they informed him that there was an accident and the victim was hospitalised.
As a result, he went to the GPH, where he subsequently identified the injured person as his wife.
The grieving husband said up to yesterday afternoon, he was awaiting a call from the police to inform him about possible charges for the driver.
He expressed dissatisfaction with the manner in which the matter is being dealt with, while noting that he understands that the vehicle involved in the accident was already released to the driver. “He (the driver) ain’t supposed to get bail to me. They (police) done give up the vehicle back to the family and suh,” Goourdat said.
Seecharan was the mother of two children, ages 9 and 1.
