Drivers in West Berbice fatal accident plead guilty to drunk driving

The two drivers who were allegedly racing along the Number 41 Village, West Coast Berbice Public Road, resulting in the death of pedestrian, Gregory Stanley, have been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.

The appeared Wellington two drivers at the Fort Magistrate’s Court, where they pleaded guilty to the charge and were placed on $300,000 bail. They were ordered to lodge their passports and return today, August 7, for sentencing.

A police source told Stabroek News, that other charges are expected to be instituted against the drivers when they return to court.

Stanley, also known as `Backtoe’ ,54, of Number 41 Village, West Coast Berbice, was unemployed and resided with an aunt.

According to informatio­n gathered, the two vehicles were travelling west along the public road when one attempted to overtake the other. However, after a car was approachin­g in the opposite direction, the overtaking car was reportedly forced to pull back into its lane hitting the front car to the right side in the process. The front car then lost control and swerved off the road, slammed into a parked car and then hit the pedestrian and a cyclist.

The accident is said to have occurred sometime around 6.15 am last Wednesday.

The pedestrian and the female cyclist were both rushed to the Fort Wellington Hospital, where the pedestrian was pronounced dead on arrival and the cyclist who sustained injuries to her legs was transferre­d to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital.
