Guyana out of tour of Tobago
-sets sights on senior C’bean championships
Lack of funding coupled with concerns over the safety of the cyclists has forced the Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) to pull out of participating in the Tour of Tobago.
This was disclosed by Racing Secretary, Malcolm Soonaram. The event is set to commence today.
“The GCF did not raise enough funds to participate in the Tour of Tobago,” Soonaram told Stabroek Sport.
The GCF had already named Micheal Anthony, Jornel Yearwood of Linden Bauxite Flyers, Team Evolution’s Paul DeNobrega and Trojan’s Curtis Dey to compete at the meet.
According to Sonaram, the cyclists had already raised money for their airfare while the GCF had secured some sponsorship.
He, however disclosed that the sponsorship raised was inadequate.
The Racing Secretary pointed out that a Bar-bQue was expected to be a profitable fund raising activity but the Federation lost money on that venture.
Soonaram also disclosed that following conversations with persons in Tobago, the recent flood there had made the roads muddy and the federation was concerned over the safety of their riders.
He said the funds will now be used towards participation in the Senior Caribbean Cycling Championships which is set for Cuba from November 1-3.
Soonaram said that tour will be cheaper since all that is required is airfare.
The team will comprise of five men, three women and three officials. Confirmed for the event are Anthony, DeNobrega and Dey while spots are open for Briton John and Jamaul John who are arguably the in-form riders.
He also indicated that both Johns have been contacted with respect to their participation adding that an official letter will be sent within the week.
Yearwood and Andre Green are the standby riders.
In the female category, only Denise Jeffrey will participate since Claire Fraser-Green is unable to participate.
Three officials will be Malcolm Soonaram, Marc Soonaram and Enzo Matthews.
The Racing Secretary also disclosed that United States-based rider, Raynauth Jeffrey has been confirmed to ride in the Time Trials.
