Narine shrugs off Verwey to clinch third handicap title

-Da Silva claims maiden squash title

-

Nicholas Narine was tactically sound yesterday afternoon during his 2-1 win over Nicholas Vewey one of Guyana’s rising talents on the squash court to cop championship honours in the Open Category of this year’s Ansa McAl Trading Limited sponsored Handicap Squash tournament at the Georgetown Squash Court.

Narine, who was relentless and worked his younger opponent around the court, took the first set 15-14.

Verwey’s will to succeed landed him a 15-13 second set win to tie the match but it was the experience of Narine which carried him over the line as he held his composure in the final set to win the match 15-13.

Meanwhile, the category ‘A’ title went to 12-yearold Louis Da Silva who defeated Zachary Persaud 2-0 in the final.

Da Silva took the first set 15-6 to cruise to a 1-0 lead, however, the second set saw much more determined Persaud who managed to push the final set down to the wire which included several lead changes.

Persaud had the upper hand early on and secured a 6-2 lead before Da Silva reined him in to tie the game at six. Persaud pulled away to earn another lead at 9-6. The set was subsequently tied at 9, 13 and 14 before Da Silva, who kept his cool, secured a 15-14 win to clinch his maiden squash title.

Shiloh Asregado defeated Matthew Spooner (6) 15-8, 15-6 to claim third place prize in that category.
