Cop freed of causing death, drunk driving charges

-

Deputy Superintendent of Police Patrick Todd was yesterday freed of a charge of causing the death of 64year-old cyclist Conrad Alleyne just over a year ago.

The charge against Todd stated that on September 12th, 2018, at Boerasirie Bridge, West Coast Demerara, he drove motor vehicle PTT 992 in a manner dangerous to the public and caused the death of Alleyne.

A second charge alleged that on the same date he drove the vehicle while under the influence.

Trial Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul upheld a no-case submission which was made by Todd’s attorney, Dexter Todd, yesterday at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court. The no-case submission was made on the grounds that the prosecution had failed to provide sufficient evidence to prove elements, such as speeding, in the case. A nocase submission for the second charge was also upheld by the magistrate as the court agreed that the prosecution had failed to prove its case.

As a result, Todd was discharged by the magistrate.

The accident occurred while Alleyne was riding his bicycle over the bridge. During the initial stages of the investigation, Todd was administered a breathalyser test and his breath alcohol content was found to be above the legal limit.

The police had said that Todd was travelling east along the northern side of the bridge when he suddenly felt an impact and upon investigating he saw Alleyne lying on the bridge with injuries about his body.
