Scrap metal business at 7th Field is a hazard

-

Dear Editor,

At the head of 7th Field in Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara is a scrap metal business which is continuously causing inconvenience to the residents of the area.

Unsightly and unhealthy piles of rusting garbage are strewn haphazardly along the roadway. Certainly there must be health implications with this since no one knows where these rusted garbage piles came from. They could have originated from germ infested areas and been brought to this populated residential area where illness can be easily spread to residents. Further, in the act of discharging this garbage, lots of dust and rust particles get into the air. Is this then safe for residents to inhale?

Then there are those trucks bringing in the garbage. Multiple trucks arrive at any given time and they then use the narrow roads as their private parking lot. This of course then creates traffic chaos.

Finally there are the massive container trucks coming to collect the scrap metal. These trucks are the main culprits that broke up the recently resurfaced access road. The roads in this area are narrow so these trucks encroach the shoulder resulting in the edges being broken off and creating deep potholes. Further, whenever these container trucks are in the area, traffic comes to a virtual standstill because of the size of the trucks and the narrowness of the roads.

It seems that the owner of this business is completely unaware of the difficulties his business poses to the residents. Or he simply does not care!

I am therefore asking if the relevant authorities can intervene so as to bring back some semblance of order and normalcy to the community.

Certainly residents have as much rights as the businessman. But in this case it seems these “rights” are unfairly skewed in the interest of the businessman.

Yours faithfully,
