Sam Hinds Jr freed of cop assault, resisting arrest

-

Samuel Hinds Jr. last week heard that five charges against him, including assaulting a policeman, were discharged after a no-case submission made by his lawyer was upheld by a city magistrate.

Hinds Jr., the son of former longtime Prime Minister Samuel Hinds, had been charged with assaulting a policeman; resisting arrest; behaving disorderly; driving a motor vehicle for which the identification mark was not visible; and refusing to take a breathalyser test.

It was alleged that on May 9th, 2019, at Main Street, Georgetown, Hinds Jr. resisted arrest from a Police Constable and assaulted the said officer, Police Constable Canterbury, a peace officer who was acting in the execution of his duties. It was also alleged that on the same day and at the same location, he behaved in a disorderly manner. It was also alleged that on the same day and at the same location, Hinds drove motor vehicle PMM 4446 when the identification mark on the vehicle was not visible. The final charge stated that on May 9, 2019, at Main Street, Georgetown, Hinds refused to take a breathalyser test from Police Constable Thom.

Hinds Jr. was represented by attorney Latchmie Rahamat, who made a no-case submission in which she contended that the prosecution failed to present sufficient evidence against Hinds Jr to warrant a conviction.

This submission was upheld by trial magistrate Clive Nurse, who then discharged all five of the charges.
