Family loses home in Port Mourant fire

-

A Port Mourant, Corentyne upper flat apartment was destroyed yesterday by a fire, suspected to be of electrical origin, leaving a family of seven seeking help to find a new home.

Angela Doman told Stabroek News last evening that she resided with her elderly mother, brother, three daughters and a niece in the upper flat of the house.

She explained that she left home for work around 11.30 am while her mother was sleeping in the hammock and her niece was playing in the bottom house. “The neighbour call me sister and tell she fire in the house upstairs and then she run over and wake my mommy,” she added.

Doman said her mother attempted to run upstairs to put out the fire but was unable to do so. She suffered minor burn injuries to her arm and face.

The fire reportedly started in the front room of the upper flat of the house, which also stores clothing, Stabroek News was told.

“The neighbour say like 8 o’ clock the GPL [Guyana Power and Light] wire to we house spark but she ain’t take it for nothing,” Doman noted. She added, “Normally the GPL wire to me sister house over there does spark and when we call GPL them don’t do nothing but them people say we own spark today”.

The family estimated their total loss of items to be over $500,000.

The family, which was taking care of the house for an overseas couple, is uncertain of where they will now reside and Doman appealed for assistance from the public. She can be contacted on telephone number 664-8793.
