Section of Eccles New Scheme Road has severely deteriorated

-

Dear Editor,

The deterioration of a section of the road to the Haags Bosch Landfill Site, between Republic Gardens and the eastern end of the Windsor Estates gated community, poses serious risks of damage to vehicles and injury to users of that road. This road has taken on more importance in recent times, in that it serves as a bypass for East Bank traffic, especially during peak hours or whenever there is congestion on the public road.

As a result of the poor condition of the above-mentioned section of the road, garbage trucks, container trucks and other heavyduty equipment have resorted to using the community road that runs parallel to the Landfill Site road in the new Eccles Housing Scheme.

Editor this is a very depressing development for residents which has led to the degradation of the community in many ways. It brings in its wake a significant noise nuisance all day and at nights, destruction of parapets which are maintained at the expense of property owners, pollution of the environment with debris that falls from garbage trucks, not to mention the deterioration of air quality. It is reasonable to assume that the community road was not constructed with this volume and weight of traffic in mind, and as a consequence, it has begun to show signs of stress and deterioration of the shoulder at certain points. If urgent action is not taken, very soon this section of the community would mirror what is happening on the Landfill Site road - no road and a filthy environment.

Whenever this or any other matters are reported to the NDC you are told that the area has not been handed over by the Central Housing and Planning Authority. One is left to wonder about the usefulness of our representative who was elected at the much vaunted Local Government Elections. It is not to say that residents are not doing some things for themselves. Residents arrange for their garbage collection, in some instances purchase and install street lights and engage in other activities that contribute to a clean and safe community. So, residents are very much interested in the development of their community.

Editor, I am calling on the relevant authority to save our community.

Yours faithfully, Derick A Lowe
