‘Nationals’ kicks off tomorrow

More than 1500 student athletes and teachers from across the 592 will converge in the city and West Demerara to compete in the 59th edition of the National Schools Cycling, Swimming and Track and Field Championsh­ips which starts tomorrow

The National Aquatic Centre, the National Park and the National Track and Field Centre at Leonora will be a hive of activities as students and teachers from the 15 districts battle for medals and one year’s bragging rights.

Tomorrow from 16:00hrs at Leonora, the 10km road races (male and female) will coincide with the opening and play better cricket”

She pointed out that in this series for ceremony which will be followed by the commenceme­nt of Track and Field events like the 800m.

According to, Brushell Blackman, PRO of the event, speakers at the opening ceremony will include: Mark Lyte (President of the Guyana Teachers Union), Minister of Social Cohesion, Dr. George Norton and Chief Education Officer of the Ministry of Education, Marcel Hutson.

President David Granger is the official Patron for the fixture which culminates on Friday.

On Monday, swimming and cycling will be held from 09:00hrs at the Aquatic Centre and the National Park respective­ly.

The annual fixture is important for fostering youths in the spirit of competitio­n, goodwill, discipline and striving for excellence.

Upper Demerara/Kwakwani District (10) are the holders of the coveted ‘Champions of Champions Trophy’.

Sponsors for the mega event include Banks DIH Limited, BK Group of Companies, Jags Aviation, BK Super Mix, Star Party Rental, H&J Entertainm­ent and NCN.
