Murder of Albouystown businesswoman not cold case - police

-

Just over six months after an Albouystown businesswoman was killed, the police’s investigations continue as no one has been charged for the murder.

58-year-old Nalini Persaud was killed on May 2nd after she and her husband were attacked by home invaders who robbed them of cash and jewellery.

Persaud was the proprietor of Nalo’s Variety Shop which she operated at the bottom flat of her James and Non Pariel streets, Albouystown home.

A few days after the incident the police had only reportedly detained one person for questioning about the murder. However, no one was charged arrest.

When contacted on Monday, commander of Regional Division 4 (A), Assistant Commissioner, E. Thomas, stated that the investigations are still ongoing into the murder. The commander could not reveal any other information about the investigation, but noted that it is “not a cold case”.

In July when the matter was last reported on, the acting crime chief at that time, Michael Kingston had said the investigation was a very sensitive one.

According to previous reports, Persaud and her husband Mahendra Rampersaud were attacked around 3 am on May 2nd by four armed masked men. The woman and her husband were separated as he was taken to the bottom flat of the building which houses the shop and tied up.

The man had told Stabroek News that his wife was screaming following that throughout the ordeal and he was released some hours later by a customer who noticed the door to the shop slightly opened later that morning. The discovery of Persaud’s body was subsequently and she was reportedly seen with a noose around the neck. A post-mortem report revealed that Persaud died as a result of compression to the neck and blunt trauma to the head.
