Valerie Leung robbed after leaving GECOM
Presidential Candidate of the People’s Republic Party (PRP) Dr Valerie Leung was on Sunday afternoon attacked and robbed shortly after leaving the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) Headquarters at Kingston, Georgetown.
Leung on Tuesday told Stabroek News that while the incident which occurred around 4.45pm has left her traumatized, she is grateful that she was not injured.
“…I am just very thankful to God that he didn’t injure me or kill me,” she said.
Leung explained that she left GECOM and was walking home when she felt someone pulling her handbag from behind. At the time, she was on a call.
“I was walking from Fort Street (Kingston) along Barrack Street and when I crossed over High Street. A few yards in, next to the church…I was actually talking on my cellphone and walking along and someone came up behind me. I felt someone pulled on my purse. So I just held onto the purse,” Leung related.
She said her attacker, who did not demand anything pushed her to the ground after which he snatched her handbag and cellular phone and ran.
Leung said it appears as though the bandit had an accomplice waiting on a motorcycle on High Street.
She explained that in her phone case was her National ID card which she obtained just days ago, her bank card and driver licence. The handbag contained important documents and a quantity of cash.
“He took my bag and my phone and unfortunately I had my national ID card which is the first national ID card I have had in my whole life. I got it just four days ago. I was very pleased with it and he took that,” Leung stated.
“Things that wouldn’t matter to them except for the cash but it matters to me,” she added. The matter was report to the police on Sunday evening. An investigation has since been launched but there has been no arrest/s as yet.
Leung could not say whether her attacker was armed.
