11 witnesses to testify at Leopold St murder inquiry

-

Eleven witnesses are expected to testify in the Preliminary Inquiry (PI) into the murder charge against Shaleza Ellis, who is accused of the fatal Christmas morning stabbing of another woman.

Ellis is charged with the murder of Latoya Haywood, a mother of two who succumbed to her injuries last month after being in a coma for over a month.

It is alleged that on January 23, 2020, at Georgetown, Ellis murdered Haywood, called ‘Toya.’

During a hearing at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on Thursday, Prosecutor Neville Jeffers told the court that 11 witnesses are ready to testify. However, he said, there are two outstanding statements from two of Haywood’s relatives who had identified her body at the hospital. The other statements in relation to the matter were subsequently disclosed and the matter was adjourned until March 6, when the outstanding statements are to be disclosed.

Haywood, of Leopold Street, had spent Christmas Eve night at a Breda Street party with her relatives and friends. At the party, she approached Alfie Garraway, who is also Ellis’ boyfriend, and asked him to buy her a drink. Ellis reportedly got angered at Haywood’s request and an argument ensued.

Shortly after, Haywood’s cousin, Tenisha Favorite, turned up at the scene and got into an argument with Ellis. While Ellis was being driven away from the scene, she reportedly attempted to stab Favorite with a knife but ended up stabbing Haywood instead.
