John heads to the US seeking Int’l success
One of Guyana’s leading cyclists, Jamual John, recently departed to ply his trade in the United States of America with the intention of transferring his success onto the international circuit.
John, who will be riding for Team Foundation in New York, told Stabroek Sport yesterday that his aim is to impress his new club by climbing the podium steps as many times as possible.
The 23 year-old national cyclist stated that in “his first big break” his intention is to win as much races as possible.
“I am looking to achieve at least five big wins before I return home,” said John who also disclosed that he may be returning home in July.
John, who was crowned the national road race champion last year, pointed out that he will be receiving the race schedule for his sojourn on March 4 but he is already anticipating racing in the famed Tour of Somerville.
The Tour of Somerville is an annual, three-day series of bicycle races held in and around Somerville, New Jersey during Memorial Day weekend. The feature Memorial Day event, the KuglerAnderson 50-mile race for professional and elite cyclists is the oldest competitive bicycle race in the USA, having first been run in 1940.
The event has become known as ‘The Kentucky Derby of Cycling’ and draws international Olympians and top cyclists from around the world.
Meanwhile, John also disclosed that prior to departure, he received an endorsement from DeSinco Limited, through their distribution partnership with cosmetic giant Unilever.
According to Brand Manager, Sarah Savory, the sponsorship will fall under the Degree Antiperspirant brand which was fitting, as the product targets a base of active, sport and fitness-driven consumers.
“With Jamual being one of the most outstanding in Guyana’s cycling, we believe that he embodies the spirit of the brand,” she declared.
“Degree believes in celebrating people who push themselves to do more and aim to improve. We’re happy that Jamual is taking this opportunity to improve his craft and that we can help him along the way.
