Bunty Singh wins Chutney Monarchy

-

Bunty Singh won the Chutney Monarchy last Saturday at Better Hope Community Centre Ground, besting nine other competitors with his song “She Want Me To Be She Raja”.

He wrested the title from Steven Ramphal who bettered him last year, becoming a three-time monarch. Bunty won the Chutney title in 2016 and 2018 before losing to Steven last year. This year, an injured Steven took second place. Performing despite orders from the doctor, Steven had to be helped off stage at the end of his song as he was too weak to stand.

In third place was newcomer Tony Cuttz with his song “Neighbour Roti”. He shared that it was Bunty who inspired him to enter the competition and now that he has come third, he is even more motivated to try for the title next year.

Vicadi Singh finished fourth with his song, “Mousie and She Tassa”. The other contestants included former monarchs Vanita Willie, Young Bill Rogers and Pooran Seeraj, along with Chris Ramphal, Arjit Singh and AW Lyrical.

The monarch copped the first prize of $1.5 million.

Meanwhile in the Calypso competition, Lindener Lester ‘De Professor’ Charles won the crown, with Young Bill Rogers coming second and Junior Calypso Monarch Omiah Hall in third place.

This year’s Soca Monarch is the inimitable Jumo Primo. Steven Ramphal took second place, Melissa ‘Vanilla’ Roberts was third. Fourth and fifth places went to

Vintage and Relon Sumner respectively. Relon, who is this year’s Junior Soca

Monarch, also received the Best Newcomer award.
