AAG to meet this week on way forward
Several events across the globe have been affected by the COVID-19 (coronavirus) outbreak, which has been declared a pandemic this week.
As a result, the council of the Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG), will meet later this week to chart the way forward with regards to their calendar of activities.
This is according to President of the association, Aubrey Hutson.
Hutson told Stabroek Sport yesterday that during the meeting, a discussion will be held on how to successfully plan and navigate for the remainder of the season to both protect the athletes from the pandemic and also provide platforms for them to compete.
Said Hutson “As you know, it’s an Olympic year and track and field is an outdoor sport and the virus would not have as much an effect on it as it would indoor sports.”
Hutson also noted that the association does not garner substantial funds from the gates of track and field events and as such, the sport will not be affected as other indoor sports.
He also noted that the health of athletes and officials are paramount and noted that every precaution will be taken.
The meeting comes on the heels of the cancellation of this year’s CARIFTA Games which were scheduled to be held in Bermuda during the Easter weekend.
According to an email seen by this publication, consultation with the Executive Board of NACAC and the leadership of the Bermuda National Athletics Association, resulted in the mutually agreed decision to cancel the games that were scheduled to take place in Hamilton, Bermuda from April 10-13.
