Man charged with illegal gun possession accuses cops of beating him

-

A man charged with illegal possession of a gun was remanded to prison when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

Kent Isaacs, 49, appeared before Principal Magistrate Sherdel IsaacsMarcus and told the court that he was beaten by two police officers before being arrested. It is alleged that on March 22nd at Garnett Street,

Albouystown, Isaacs had a 9mm pistol in his possession, while he was not the lawful holder of a firearm licence. He pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Isaacs told the court that the officers who allegedly beat him, saw him while he was walking home and approached him. “They stop me, search me and then tell me they going to lock me up and then they beat me,” he said. The defendant said that he sustained injuries to his ribs as a result of the beating. He added that he was never taken to the hospital for medical attention.

Police Prosecutor Delon Sullivan, however, related to the court that the two officers saw Isaacs acting in a suspicious manner. He said that they decided to follow him and saw him throw an object over a fence. The policemen immediately approached and checked the yard which the object was thrown into. Sullivan said that during the search, the ranks recovered the object and saw that it was a gun.

The prosecutor objected to bail being granted citing the seriousness of the offence and that the police saw Isaacs with the weapon. Sullivan added that Isaacs was suspected to be a flight risk since he had given no address to the court. However, he mentioned that the defendant had no previous problems with the law.

Isaacs was then remanded to prison until April 22nd.
