AAG likely to restart season next month
And now for some good news. The Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG) is looking to restart its season, perhaps by mid next month.
This is according to President of the AAG, Aubrey Hutson.
After being rocked by the COVID-19 pandemic earlier in the year, sports leagues and associations across the globe are now beginning to regain their footing and athletes to resume training and competitive play.
Hutson told this publication yesterday that the association could restart its season with road races next month, a precursor to the National Championships on August 8-9.
The AAG head noted that the association received a correspondence from the governing body, World Athletics indicating that August 8 and 9 are the two dates reserved for National
Federations around the world to host their National Seniors Championships.
He then stated that if it was up to him, the AAG will host warm up events to get the competitive juices of the athletics flowing while also taking consideration of the COVID-19 restrictions.
Said Hutson:“The AAG would have received correspondence from World Athletics and we are working with those guidelines and yet at the same time we are listening to our local government in terms of lifting the restrictions in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.”
The local COVID-19 restrictions were scheduled to be lifted on June 3, but it has since been extended by 14 days.
“With this in mind, I would like to see as president that we hold some kind of competition that will prepare the National Seniors before the 8th and 9th.
For me I would lead council into a discussion into us even running our National Youth and Junior Championships around the same time or even afterwards.”
Hutson added:“As a precursor to the National Youth and Junior Championships, I am looking at doing a road race on July 19 or the 26th which will bring our athletes back into the competitive mode with a nice fun run, a 5k, 10k and probably a 3000 and 1500m for our younger athletes and our sprinters. So for now this is the way we are looking at restarting our calendar.”
However, Hutson is optimistic and is also looking down the road at lucrative and internationally flavored 10k races.
“We are also waiting the reopening of Courts so we can go into discussion with them about the Courts 10K and we still plan to host our leg of the South American 10K come November.
Hutson concluded by stating that:“These are just the thoughts of the president and we still have to have deliberations with our clubs and executives for fine tuning and confirmation of these events that were mentioned before.”
