Chess federation aiming to produce first grandmaster

-

The Guyana Chess Federation, in an effort to raise the standing of the sport locally, recently began discussions with three prominent International Chess Federation (FIDE) personnel for guidance to design a programme to produce elite local players.

The international officials on the federation’s radar are Sonja Johnson, Chairwoman- FIDE Planning and Development Commission, Victor Bologan- Executive Director FIDE Management Board and Attorney-at-Law, Ms Yolander Persaud- FIDE Ethics and Disciplinary Commission Councillor.

The board’s objective of the ongoing discourse is to create a virtual chess incubator where local chess players will have one-on-one world-class training from reputable FIDE accredited GMs and IMs.

“It’s time Guyana produces its first Grandmaster,” the federation communicated via a correspondence seen by Stabroek Sports.

It added: “To achieve this ultimate goal, it’s necessary to enhance our lagging training capacity. The large pool of talented young players deserves the best environment and training tools to excel and play stronger and excellent chess.”

This initiative and collaboration are being pursued in conjunction with the consulates of the USA, Russia, Cuba, India and China.

At the conclusion of the discussions, a programme will be produced and presented for implementation. The programme will be integrated into the annual schedule of activities as the GCF moves forward, the release stated.
