Driver gets bail as cops wrap probe of grass cutter’s death

-

The driver who was involved in the accident that claimed the life of grass cutter Wayne James on Tuesday evening has been released on station bail.

Police Commander of Region 4(c) Assistant Commissioner Royston Andries-Junor told Stabroek News yesterday that the police are hoping to wrap up the investigation by Monday, after which they will seek legal advice.

James, 53, of Cinema Road, Melanie, East Coast Demerara, died in the accident, which occurred around 6.50 pm.

An autopsy yesterday revealed that James sustained multiple injuries consistent with a vehicular accident.

Police enquiries revealed that James was proceeding east along the southern side of the public road, when the driver alleged that he suddenly swerved across the road and into the path of a car, PMM 8751. At the time, the car was proceeding east along the northern side of the said road.

As a result, the driver told the police that he applied brakes but collided with James.

James fell onto the roadway. He was picked up in an unconscious condition by the driver and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The driver, a 22-yearold resident of Haslington, also on the East Coast, passed a breathalyser test.

Ranks of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) are currently in pursuit of two persons they have identified as main suspects in the recent chopping of a Lusignan resident.

Commander of Region 4 (c) Royston Andries-Junor told Stabroek News that the person that was initially in custody in connection with the wounding, which allegedly took place on July 12 th , is no longer in custody but the police have eyes on two others. “We had one person in custody but [we realised] that he is not the main suspect…we have two suspects in mind but we haven’t made any arrests yet,” he detailed.

Andries-Junor explained that the GPF plans to release wanted bulletins for the men as soon as possible.

Safraz Khan, of Grass Field, Lusignan, was chopped multiple times by a number of Spanish-speaking men on July 12 th, leaving him severely wounded.

According to those who live nearby, Khan and a few other friends were in front of his house imbibing and taunting people who passed by. “They had a get together and when people pass them mek trouble with them and they laugh and suh and me ain’t know like them trouble the wrong person,” a neighbour, who did not want to be identified, said.

Communications Manager of the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) Chelauna Providence told this newspaper that Khan is still hospitalised but “conscious, alert and recovering”.
