Eighty-four traffic deaths so far for year
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) Traffic Department has recorded a total of eighty accidents which resulted in eighty-four deaths for the year thus far and the majority of the victims were motorcyclists, Traffic Chief Linden Isles said.
Isles said out of the total accidents, 37 involved motorcycles.
The figures shows a significant increase when compared to the same period last year. From January to the beginning of July, 2019, there were total of 49 accidents with 52 deaths.
A number of these accidents occurred after the curfew period, which has been put in place in an effort to prevent the speed of the novel-coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
Below are a few of the fatal accidents which occurred recently.
On Saturday afternoon, Trevor Mangal, 40 of Lot 52 Industry, Crown Dam died after the motorcar in which he was travelling was involved in a crash along the Montrose, East Coast Demerara Public Road.
The following day, Vickram Budhram, 46, of Lot 24 First Street, Mon
Repos, ECD was struck down by a speeding motorcar, PPP 5422. At the time, Budhram was on his way home.
On the same day, motorcyclist Leon Wilkins of ‘B’ Field, Sophia was killed in a separate accident after he allegedly crashed into a cyclist on Mandela Avenue.
Last Tuesday night, grass cutter Wayne James 53, of Cinema Road, Melanie, ECD, was killed while he was riding along the public road. The driver alleged that James suddenly swerved across the road and into the path of a car, PMM 8751.
Meanwhile, on July 2nd, 24-year-old cyclist David Shepherd of Lot 260
Section ‘C’ Enterprise, ECD lost his life after he was involved in a collision with minibus BXX 4563 along the Nonpareil public road. Additionally, on June 14 around 4.30, Navindra Jodhan, 30, who was offduty at the time, was proceeding on motorcycle CJ 88224 among a group of bikers when he was involved in an accident along the Number 68 Village Public Road. He succumbed to his injuries just over a week after.
