Chile, Bolivia through, Venezuela pipped

Five federation­s of the Americas will head to division two after three tough days of group play in division three in the ongoing 2020 FIDE Chess Online Olympiad.

The first to book their tickets were Chile and Bolivia, who took the first two places in Group D. Venezuela lost the opportunit­y to make a clean sweep for the Americas when Denmark beat them in the second tie-break to take the third position of classifica­tion.

Uruguay and Jamaica on the other hand deserve a special mention, ranking fifth and sixth respective­ly to give the Americas five of the top six positions in Group D. Group E, saw Mexico, Costa Rica and Guatemala reserving their places in division two. The top of the individual performanc­e for the Americas went to the female FIDE Master Raisa Melissa Barria Baker from Panama in Group E, who played all nine matches, winning seven and drawing two.

Other outstandin­g performanc­es came from Demark’s Grandmaste­r Mads Anderson in Group D who won eight and tied one, Singapore’s Woman Grandmaste­r Qianyun Gong in Group A, who won seven and tied two, Sabrina Abrorova of Tajikistan in Group B, who won all nine and Tyani De Rycke from Belgium in Group C who won eight and drew one.

Next is Division Two, which will feature eight Federation­s of the Americas. Argentina, Colombia, and Ecuador will join Bolivia, Chile, Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Mexico in pursuit of promotion to the Top Division.
