Put these recommendations in place to end the political appointments problem

- Dear Editor,

The letter written by Dr. Jerry Jailall to Stabroek News and published on

September 2nd 2020 `There is a solution to this ` political appointment’ problem’ was well crafted. It was chock-full of ideas and suggestions for avoiding the anguish of political firings conducted by new governments in Guyana. It provided magnificent solutions to significantly reduce the toxicity of political and racial divisions that these terminations of employment exacerbate. This trend has been perpetuated by successive régimes. It is left to all of us to get the government and parliamentarians to put Jailall’s recommendations into law.

Our primary effort at this juncture, rife with challenges and opportunities, should be to focus on unity. It is our best tool against the seemingly overwhelming economic and social divisions. We have large reserves of the finest grade of oil now being extracted. Along with the natural gas associated with these reserves and our other numerous, rich, natural resources, we need to now aggressively find the best qualified Guyanese to galvanize and capitalize. No time for pettiness and partisanship.

On a daily basis our media is rife with partisan banter and bickering while our politicians should be getting on with the task of nation building. We have become “Trumpesque,” providing plenty rhetoric and drama without constructive policies.

Yours faithfully, Conrad Barrow
