DPP advises charge against cop over Golden Grove woman’s death

-

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has instructed the Guyana Police Force to institute charges against a police constable who fatally struck and killed a Golden Grove woman while driving a Guyana Police Force minibus.

Police Commander of Region 4 (b) Senior Superintendent Linden Isles, when contacted, stated that the constable is expected to make his court appearance shortly in connection with the death of Dulmattie Boodlall.

Boodlall, 58, of Golden Grove, was on her way to work when she was struck down at Nandy Park, East Bank Demerara, as she attempted to cross the public road on January 5.

A police report had stated that at the time of the accident, the East Bank three-lane was active and the bus, which is attached to the Tactical Services Unit, was heading north along the western side of the eastern carriageway. It was being driven by a constable stationed at the unit and attached to former President David Granger.

According to the driver, at about 7.26 am, he was approaching the pedestrian crossing when he suddenly saw Boodlall crossing from west to east on the crossing. He swerved east to avoid a collision but because of the short distance he struck her.

The report further stated that the woman was picked up by the driver in an unconscious condition and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

A post-mortem examination conducted on the body of the deceased had established her cause of death as multiple injuries. The woman was said to have suffered head injuries, a broken arm, and other injuries about her body.
