WDFA executive blames COVID-19 for zero movement in transfer window

-

With the presence of COVID-19 resulting in the continued lockdown of the football season, West Demerara Football Association (WDFA) secretary Adrian Giddings confirmed that the association observed zero movement during the recently concluded January transfer window.

During an exclusive interview with Stabroek Sport, Giddings stated that the association did not witness any transfer amongst the clubs under its umbrella, with the only movement occurring between a local club and an Elite League team.

He expounded, “We didn’t have any traffic, and nothing came to me. The only transfer I was aware of was a Pouderoyen player leaving to go to Den Amstel who are an Elite Club and basically is like an association. Being a member of Pouderoyen I was made aware of it. At the association level, there was no traffic, nothing at all.”

Giddings opined that the lack of player movement directly correlates to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic which has halted the respective football seasons at the various member associations. He opined that the situation might normalise if the pandemic subsides, as the association traditionally experiences high volume of traffic and movement during the respective transfer periods.

“Basically it’s because of the COVID19, nothing is playing at the moment and everyone has lost interest. I think the players have lost the interest in everything because nothing is going on, probably when everything normalises it might go back to before but it was a very quiet window. Usually we get a lot of traffic and movement during the window,” Giddings explained.

According to the information from the official FIFA Worldwide Registration Periods Calendar, Guyana’s ongoing Transfer or Registration period will occur from January 1 to 31, 2021. This applies to all three aspects of the season which are the Men, Women and Amateur sections. Meanwhile, the second Transfer or Registration Date was not listed. This also relates to all three segments.
