-

The police officer who struck and killed a pedestrian was yesterday charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

Stephan Ramsay appeared before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Providence Magistrate’s Court, where the charge was read to him.

It is alleged that on January 5th he caused the death of Dulmattie Boodlall by driving in a manner dangerous to the public. He pleaded not guilty to the charge and he was released on $600,000 bail.

He is to make his next court appearance on February 19th, 2021.

Stabroek News previously reported that Boodlall, 58, of Golden Grove, was on her way to work when she was struck down at Nandy Park, East Bank Demerara, as she attempted to cross the public road on January 5th.

A police report had stated that at the time of the accident, the East Bank three-lane was active and a police force bus, which is attached to the Tactical Services Unit, was heading north along the western side of the eastern carriageway. It was being driven by Ramsay.

He had told investigators that at about 7.26 am he was approaching the pedestrian crossing when he suddenly saw Boodlall crossing from west to east on the crossing. He swerved east to avoid a collision but because of the short distance he struck her.

The report further stated that the woman was picked up by the driver in an unconscious condition and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

A post-mortem examination conducted on the body of the deceased had established her cause of death as multiple injuries. The woman was said to have suffered head injuries, a broken arm, and other injuries about her body.
