-

A taxi driver is now hospitalised after he was shot three times during an attempted carjacking at Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara, on Wednesday afternoon.

Up to yesterday afternoon, Raulvin Maynard, also known as ‘Raulo,’ 41, of Melanie East Coast Demerara, remained in a stable condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH), where he was admitted after the attack.

A Guyana Police Force (GPF) statement explained that Maynard’s attacker, who was armed with a handgun, relieved him of a Blu cellular phone, valued at $8,000.

The attack occurred at about 4pm at Quamina Road, Beterverwagting, where Maynard had dropped off a customer.

He was driving with his daughter in the vehicle when he was stopped by the suspect, who requested that he take him to the Railway Embankment.

The police added that Maynard, who accepted the request, was turning around the vehicle when the suspect whipped out a handgun and ordered him to stop, hand over his money and exit the car.

According to the report, Maynard held onto the gun and the suspect shot him to his upper thigh.

The report added that Maynard once again held onto the suspect’s gun and in the process was shot twice; once to his left upper arm and to his left wrist.

The suspect, who relieved him of his phone, subsequently escaped.

According to the police, publicspirited citizens rushed Maynard to the GPH.

When contacted yesterday, GPH spokeswoman Chelauna Providence stated that Maynard was admitted to the Male Ward and was conscious and alert.

The police yesterday said no arrest had been made as yet but their investigations were ongoing.
