NDC chairman commits to repair leaky Mahaica Market

-

Basmattie Singh, the newly appointed Chairman of the Neighbourhood Democratic Council of Mahaica, has assured that works will be undertaken to remedy the current problems at the Mahaica Market.

In light of a letter published by Stabroek News detailing the condition of the market place when it rains, Singh disclosed that there is an estimate to conduct remedial works but the council’s cash grant is insufficient to handle the cost. However, she noted that the council is awaiting the passing of the national budget in order to move forward with the project.

Additionally, she said since taking office, she has been visited by stall owners who have raised concerns about leaking roofs and other irritants at the market that are in need of fixing. All these issues, she said, will be included in the project for the market repair.

Singh posited that it would be unfair for the affected individuals to have to suffer for an extended period as she recalled informing stall owners during their visit to the council that she intends to use her good offices to ensure the situation at the market is remedied.

Singh has appealed to the vendors to endure a while longer as she assured them that their complaints will be remedied soon and quality work will be done.

Stabroek News previously reported on the unpleasant experience for shoppers and vendors whenever it rains in the vicinity of the stelling at the Mahaica market.

The writer highlighted that the area is unpaved, muddy, among other factors that are contributing to the problem.

It was reported that shoppers are forced to leap across or circumnavigate puddles of muddy water to move from one vendor to another, while some shoppers avoid the hassle altogether by wading through the mud and water.

As a consequence the vendors in the second, third and fourth rows from the roadway lose sales.

Further, the vendors are forced to don long boots to stand in or wade through the mud as they conduct their business.

There was also a complaint of a solitary fish vendor amongst the vegetable vendors, not far from a bread and cake vendor. This is some 100 metres away from the area designated for the selling of fish.

Meanwhile, the chairman disclosed that she is open to visits to allow persons to share their concerns with her as they work together to resolve their problems.
