Mon Repos guard dies after colliding with cop near UG road

-

A security guard was killed on Thursday night in an accident along Rupert Craig Highway in the vicinity of the University of Guyana (UG) Access Road, where she and a policeman collided.

The accident occurred around 10.30 pm as Bridget Rodrigues, 63, of School Street, Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara, was riding her motorcycle.

The Guyana Police Force (GPF), in a statement, stated that Rodrigues collided with a car driven by a 20 year-old police constable attached to the Brickdam Police Station’s Traffic Department.

Police enquiries revealed that the police constable was proceeding east along the southern lane of the highway, while Rodrigues was riding in the same direction.

The report explained that while the rank was approaching the intersection at UG Access Road he collided with Rodrigues as she attempted to turn into the southern lane.

As a result of the collision, she fell and suffered injuries. Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) were called and pronounced Rodrigues dead at the scene.

The vehicles were lodged to be examined by the licensing and certifying officer.

A breathalyser test conducted on the driver found no trace of alcohol in his breath, the police said. However, the rank remains in police custody assisting with the investigation.

Meanwhile, a friend of the deceased told this newspaper that Rodrigues recently bought the motorcycle. She described her as a friendly individual who continuously shared encouragement.

WASHINGTON, (Reuters) - President Joe Biden's aides have launched a formal review of the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba, reviving the Obamaera goal of closing the controversial facility with the aim of doing so before he leaves office, the White House said yesterday.

Aides involved in internal discussions are considering an executive action to be signed by Biden in coming weeks or months, two people familiar with the matter told Reuters, signaling a new effort to remove what human rights advocates have called a stain on America’s global image.

Asked whether Biden would shut the high-security prison located at the Guantanamo Naval Station by the time his presidency ends, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki told reporters: "That certainly is our goal and our intention."

But such an initiative is unlikely to bring down the curtain anytime soon on the offshore facility, due largely to the steep political and legal obstacles that also frustrated efforts by his ex-boss, former President Barack Obama, to close it.
