Miner charged with murder of Baramita farmer

A 32-year-old pork knocker was yesterday remanded to prison after he was charged with the murder of Jonah Williams, a Baramita farmer who was chopped to death in November last year.

Ruben Calvis, a resident of Arakaka, Baramita, North West District (NWD) appeared before Magistrate Dylon Bess at the Matthews Ridge Magistrate’s Court.

The charge was read to him via Zoom.

Calvis is accused of murdering Williams on November 6th, 2020 at

Cassie Creek, Baramita, NWD.

He was not required to plead to the indictable charge. The matter was adjourned until March 2nd.

The police had said investigat­ions revealed that the lifeless body of Williams, called ‘Wammick’, who was a resident of Cassie Creek was discovered lying on a trail around 3 pm.

Williams’ body bore chop wounds to his abdomen and left arm.

Calvis fled the scene and was subsequent­ly arrested by the police.

Four persons who confessed to breaching the COVID-19 Emergency Measures by attending a party were yesterday fined while the alleged host was granted bail.

Fiona Hopkinson, Cleon Critchlow, Dean McRae, Denzil Port, and Javelin Wells were yesterday charged with breaching a COVID-19 Emergency measure when they attended the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court. Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan read the charge to them.

Hopkinson was charged with breaching a restrictio­n to social activities, that is to say, she hosted a private party at Shell Road, Kitty, on February 9, therefore breaching the COVID-19 Emergency Measures. She denied this charge and was released on $5,000 bail. She will make her next appearance at court on March 16.

Critchlow, McRae, Port and Wells, were charged with attending the same party. They admitted to attending the event and were each fined $16,350.
