Three charged with growing marijuana plants

Three persons were yesterday remanded to prison on a charge of cultivatin­g prohibited marijuana plants.

Those charged were Vahaley Sinclair, 18, of Wiruni Upper Berbice River, Raynaurd Gladstone, 22, of Aroaima, Upper Berbice River and Tofan Shivnarine, 43, of Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam.

The three men appeared via Zoom before Magistrate Wanda Fortune at the Linden Magistrate’s Court, where they pleaded not guilty and were remanded to prison.

The matter was subsequent­ly transferre­d to the Kwakwani Magistrate’s Court and adjourned until April 16th, 2021.

The police had previously reported that a drug eradicatio­n exercise was conducted in Saintlus, Berbice River, Region 10, on March 31, and three men were observed carrying out work on two suspected marijuana farms.

A police report stated

Vahaley Sinclair that the two farms, located opposite each other, measured about 13 acres, with approximat­ely 40,000 plants, and 1,000 nursery plants in several trays and a camp.

Additional­ly, the report stated that there were approximat­ely 50,000 seeds found in the camp.

The camp area was also searched and two 12-gauge shotgun cartridges were found along with dried cannabis droplets, consisting of dried leaves, seeds and stems, weighing 40 lbs.

Further, a search conducted found another farm measuring about one acre

of land with 3000 plants measuring about 4-5 feet in length.

They farms were subsequent­ly destroyed.

The three men were arrested and taken to the Kwakwani Police Station along with the listed items.
