Two more men die of COVID

The Ministry of Health yesterday said that two more persons who were infected with COVID-19 have died.

According to the Ministry the latest fatalities are a 59-year-old man and a 73-year old man from Regions Six and Seven, respectively. They both died while receiving care at a medical facility. The death toll now stands at 252.

Meanwhile, 135 new COVID-19 cases were confirmed yesterday bringing the total number of cases in the country to 10, 853. Of the new cases 7 are from Region Two, 18 from Region Three, 87 from Region Four, 7 from Region Five, 4 from Region Six, 8 from Region Nine and 4 from Region Ten. Some 2,344 persons were tested yesterday.

It was also revealed that 13 persons are in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit, 69 in institutional isolation, 1015 in home isolation and 10 persons in institutional quarantine. There are 9,517 recoveries.

Meanwhile, at about midday yesterday, Guyana surpassed 50,000 vaccinations, according to Dr Leslie Ramsammy, advisor to the Minister of Health.

In a statement, he said: “It is still a far ways to go but it is an important milestone. Thirty one countries around the world have not yet administered a single dose. Barbados with over 60000 is the only Caribbean country ahead of Guyana. By this time next week, Guyana will rank # 1 in CARICOM for vaccination. This means that 10 out of every 100 adult Guyanese would have received a first dose. This puts Guyana ahead of most countries around the world. We want to ensure that we vaccinate another 100000 by the end of April. Help us”.
