A Cane Grove, Mahaica labourer was fatally stabbed by his drinking partner after an argument ensued between the two, police yesterday said.

The dead man has been identified as 48-year-old Khemraj Sukhan known as ‘Bowe’ of Coconut Dam, Cane Grove, East Coast Demerara.

In a brief statement last night, police said the murder occurred between 9 pm on Saturday and early yesterday morning.

According to preliminary investigations, the suspect and Sukhan who live in the same yard were drinking earlier in the day which later led to an argument and confrontation. However, the suspect left and went home.

At around 9.30 pm, the suspect returned to the house where they were drinking and the argument resumed and as a result the suspect stabbed Sukhan.

Police said the suspect during the argument picked up a knife and stabbed Sukhan to the right side of the chest and the left arm. Sukhan collapsed and fell on a mattress in the verandah. At about 2.40 am yesterday, the suspect, police said, visited the Cane Grove Police Station and reported that he and Sukhan had had a fight and he had fallen onto a knife and suffered injuries.

The suspect was arrested and accompanied to the scene by ranks on duty. On arrival, Sukhan was found face up on a mattress in the verandah motionless.

While ranks were processing the scene they recovered a blood-stained knife, suspected to be the murder weapon.

The body was escorted to the Lyken Funeral Parlour and is awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Police added that the suspect’s body was examined and was seen with injuries to the right side of his head and left foot. He told investigators that he suffered injuries when he and Sukhan scuffled.

He was escorted to the Mahaicony Cottage Hospital to seek medical attention. He remains in police custody.
