Dharm Shala observes 100th anniversary, a magnificent accomplishment by the Ramsaroops

- ADear Editor, Yours faithfully, Bhawanie J. Edwards

I seek your indulgence in permitting me to offer warm & heartfelt congratulations to the Ramsaroop sisters - Ms. Kella & Ms. Pamela Ramsaroop - as the Dharm Shala celebrates its 100th anniversary on the 21st April - a notable milestone in its own right.

One hundred years ago, a truly great yet humble Guyanese embarked upon a painstaking mission to serve the needs of the poor & the unfortunate - to provide a home for those in need free of charge. Having achieved this ambition, the late Pandit Ramsaroop Maraj’s dream grew and a fellow home was planned to assist more Guyanese but this time in Berbice. Upon his untimely death, the mantle was passed to his second son, the late Harry Saran Ramsaroop who followed in his father’s footsteps - match by match. Under his astute leadership, the Dharm Shala was a salvation to many during our country’s most trying economic times.

In turn upon the late Harry Saran Ramsaroop’s death, the ‘family job’ was taken up by two of his four daughters Kella & Pamela. They have paid homage to their grandfather’s dream by overseeing regular rehabilitation works to the Albouystown & Fort Canje homes which are paramount for remaining true to their purposes.

I trust Guyanese of all races will join me in praying for God’s & man’s assistance in nurturing the Dharm Shala’s ability to help this generation and those to come and in turn continue the Ramsaroop family’s ‘Labour of Love’.
