Demerara Bank security guard hospitalis­ed after collision with truck

A Demerara Bank security guard is in hospital after he was involved in an accident on Tuesday on the public road at Number 63 Village, Corentyne, Berbice.

The police yesterday disclosed that the driver and owner of motorcar, PJJ 8191, who is currently at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital following the accident, has been identified as Keith Griffith, a 61year-old father of three of Tarlogie Farm, Corentyne, Berbice. The driver of the truck, GHH 1566, which collided with the car has been identified as Zameer Khan.

The report stated that the accident occurred at 18:10 hrs at Number 63

Village, Corentyne, when the driver of the truck, with three passengers was proceeding south along the eastern driving lane at a fast rate of speed and lost control while negotiatin­g a right bend in the road. It was reported that the truck driver swerved west and collided with the motorcar being driven by Griffith which was proceeding in a northern direction along the western driving lane, at a normal rate of speed.

According to the police’s investigat­ions, the collision caused the car to spin once and it remained facing the southern direction. The truck continued proceeding south and collided with a concrete culvert and then ended up in a trench situated on the western side of the road. The driver of the motorcar suffered multiple injuries and both vehicles were damaged as a result of the accident.

Griffith was assisted by public-spirited citizens who took him out of the vehicle in a semi-conscious condition. He was rushed to the Skeldon Public Hospital where he was examined by a doctor who treated him before transferri­ng him to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital. He was admitted to the accident and emergency department and is said to be in a stable condition.

The police informed that Griffith could not provide a specimen of his breath for a breath alcohol test but that Khan, who is currently in custody, underwent a Breathalyz­er test which had a zero reading. Further, Khan has been charged and continues to assist the police with investigat­ions.

The injured man’s wife, Debra Griffith, told this newspaper that her husband was heading home from work when he was hit by the truck.

According Mrs Griffith, her husband seems to be recovering from his injuries. She disclosed that he is suffering from internal injuries and had undergone surgery on Tuesday night.
