Police make cannabis busts at Mazaruni Prison, Bartica hotel
The Guyana Police Force on Tuesday made a cannabis bust at the Mazaruni Prison, Region Seven, following a search and also at a hotel in Bartica after a raid where three persons were arrested.
The police said that on Tuesday at 17: 30 hrs and 17:50 hrs, there were searches conducted by the police at the two locations.
At the Mazaruni Prison, while conducting daily checks, ranks observed a prisoner who was acting suspiciously. The man was searched and a black bulky parcel containing leaves, seeds and stems, suspected to be cannabis was found in the his pants crotch.
A further search was subsequently conducted in the tuck-shop of the Mazaruni Prison, where two parcels containing a quantity of suspected cannabis were found. The police stated that 158 grammes of cannabis were found on the prisoner while 252 grammes of cannabis were found in the prison tuckshop.
Meanwhile, police also conducted a search at the Morocco Hotel, First Avenue, Bartica, Region Seven. Three men; a resident of Georgetown, another of East Bank Demerara, and the third of Bartica, were arrested after they were intercepted with the suspected narcotic.
According to the police report, a party of officers conducted a raid on Tuesday at the hotel. The persons were searched first and four small resealable plastic bags containing the suspected cannabis were found. A further search was conducted on in the room where the men were staying and a transparent parcel along with 21 small transparent parcels were found. These parcels contained a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis. The narcotics amounted to 560 grammes after being weighed.
The men denied ownership while being arrested and were taken to the Bartica Police Station where they remain in custody pending charges.
