National rugby finds alternate home at Campton
The Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) and its players will now have full access to the Camptown ground in Campbellville.
A long-term agreement involving the GRFU and the Campbellville Community Development Organisation, (CCDO) was signed on Wednesday, making the agreement official.
President of the Union, Ryan Dey and Secretary of the CCDO, Dawn Primo signed the agreement.
The historic signatures were inked at the Camptown facility and witnessed by executives of the GRFU and the CCDO.
The agreement gives the GRFU an alternate facility to the National Park, home of Guyana’s top ruggers.
Dey who championed the GRFU’s search for another ground to further the development of the sport which has brought the 592 much acclaim, noted that he was satisfied with the huge step made by the Union.
He is optimistic that with the support of government, rugby will continue to grow exponentially. Said Dey yesterday, “I’ve been searching high and low for an alternate spot to play rugby since my term started. The thought was then revealed to the Minister of Culture Youth and Sport [Charles Ramson Jr] and he was in total agreement of such a venture.”
Dey added “He gave us the go ahead and the assurance that once we came to an agreement with a group to partner with them on sharing the ground, he would help with the renovation of said ground.”
Dey highlighted that after trying for months to find a suitable ground the union contacted the CCDO.
“They were very open to the idea of having a multidiscipline sports ground and seeing that our interests aligned we worked on getting a mutually beneficial agreement and signed off on Wednesday.”
The GRFU head further disclosed that training and other rugby related activities will commence as soon as the ground is renovated.
Ramson Jr pledged his support to the development of rugby during a meeting with the union back in January.
