A father of two was recently sentenced to three months imprisonment after pleading guilty to stealing a gold chain.

Miguel Blackman, 23, and self-employed of Red Road, Sophia was brought before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court to answer to the charge of larceny from person. The charge stated that Blackman on May 15th, 2021 while on Water Street, Georgetown stole a gold chain valued at $60,000, property of Trevannah Haywood.

According to the facts of the court, Haywood was walking in a southerly direction in the vicinity of

Stabroek Market when the accused snatched her gold chain. The court heard that the woman gave chase behind Blackman causing him to fall to the ground. He was arrested by public-spirited citizens and taken to the Stabroek Police Outpost. He was later transferred him to the Brickdam Police Station where he was told of the allegation and placed in custody. Blackman in his address to the court told the Magistrate he had a difficult and lonely childhood.

Blackman stated that on the day in question he was asked to repay borrowed cash which he had used to restock his business. Blackman said his inability to repay caused him to become frustrated. In tears Blackman told the court that he missed his children and then turned and apologised to Haywood for his actions. Chief Magistrate McLennan counseled Blackman that nothing comes easy. He was then sentenced for the offence.
