City invites bids for lease of constabulary training complex

-

The Georgetown Mayor and City Council (M&CC) has invited bids for the leasing of the City Constabulary Training Complex building.

The deadline for the submission of bids is June 30, according to a notice published by the M&CC.

The building, located at Lot 13-14 Water and Holmes streets, South Cummingsburg, has remained out of use for several years.

In light of the plans to lease the building, Deputy Mayor Alfred Mentore, when contacted by Stabroek News, stated that the council is currently conducting work at a suitable location in Princes Street to serve as a replacement for the training complex.

He noted that the new location will allow for constables to train both internally and externally, allowing room for things such as marching on the open tarmac space. The training, he added, will improve the staff’s ability to perform their duties in service of the city better.

In April, Stabroek News had reported that Mayor Ubraj Narine denied a suggestion that the City Council was considering disposing of the City Constabulary Training Complex.

In a letter to the editor published in the April 13th edition of Stabroek News, former Mayor Hamilton Green said he received information that the Council was considering disposing of the property.

However, Narine, when contacted by this newspaper, stated that no pronouncement has been made in regards to disposing the property.

The mayor stated that the Council recognises the property as an asset and disclosed that several persons have engaged it on their interest in it. Those persons, he said, include international companies as well as both public and private local companies.

He stated that there is no intention of giving up the property but rather using it in a way to generate income and develop the city, where both the city and the Council will benefit.

He noted that his aim is to bring development to the city, which cannot be done if the building is there as “a white elephant”.
