Mon Repos man succumbs after LBI hit-and-run
A pedal cyclist succumbed on Friday following a hitand-run accident from the night before along the La Bonne Intention Railway Embankment, on the East Coast of Demerara.
The deceased, identified as Rajendra Singh, also known as ‘Raymond,’ 39, of Block 8 Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara was on his way home when he was struck down around 7pm on Thursday.
The police said Singh was riding east along the northern side of the road when an unknown vehicle struck him.
As a result of the impact, Singh fell on the roadway and suffered injuries about his body.
He was picked up in an unconscious state and placed into a pick-up truck and transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH), where he was admitted as a patient in the Emergency Unit suffering from injuries to his head. He succumbed while receiving medical attention on Friday afternoon.
His body remains at the Georgetown Public Hospital mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Meanwhile, Rajpattie Mahase, the widow of the deceased, told Stabroek News she wants justice for her husband.
Mahase stated that she was at a Mandir when she was contacted via phone and told that a relative of hers was involved in an accident.
Not knowing whether it was her husband or brother, the woman said she immediately caught a taxi and headed to the La Bonne Intention Railway Embankment area, where she saw her husband on the road.
The woman explained that police officers were already present at the scene of the accident and quickly placed him in a vehicle and transported him to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Upon arrival at the hospital,
she said, officials ran several tests on Singh and later indicated that he suffered internal bleeding, brain damage, a fractured hip, fractured ribs and a punctured liver.
She noted that she was informed that Singh was hit down by a minibus that did not stop to offer any assistance after hitting him.
Singh, who was married to the woman for 11 years, worked as a ramp attendant at the Eugene F Correia
International Airport, Ogle, East Coast Demerara.
Described as a caring and friendly person, he was said to be the sole breadwinner of the home.
According to Mahase, there were no eyewitnesses and no surveillance camera within the vicinity of the accident site. Nonetheless, the grieving woman is asking that the police hasten their investigations in order to find whomever is responsible for the man’s death.
