Foulis goldsmith crushed to death by truck

-

A goldsmith died on Monday night after he was run over by a truck at Hope West, Enmore Access Road, East Coast Demerara.

The deceased, Rajin Persad, 38, of Foulis, Enmore, East Coast Demerara, was riding a bicycle along the road when he became accidentally pinned by the truck, which was unloading sand.

Police, in a report, stated that Tillackram Dindial, 34, of Hope West, Enmore, was operating the truck, GWW 8721, on the northern parapet of Hope West, Enmore Access Road in the vicinity of his premises.

He was in the process of offloading a load of sand.

However, the report said as Dindial lowered the tray and started to reverse, his wife shouted out to him, indicating that he had run over one of their dogs.

But upon checking, Dindial observed Persad under the truck with what appeared to be blood about his body. He was subsequently picked up by public-spirited citizens and transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH), where he was pronounced dead.

A breathalyzer test was conducted on Dindial but found no trace of alcohol in his system. Nonetheless, he was taken into custody.

Meanwhile, Searanie Persad, the sister of the deceased, told Stabroek News that her brother was still alive when she arrived at the scene.

She said while he was still pinned by the truck, persons saw him move when her son attempted to place a sheet over him.

The woman said she pleaded with the four police officers present to remove the truck from pinning her brother but her pleas were ignored.

She added that the owner of the truck also prevented her brother being moved as he continued to hold on to the truck’s key.

Searanie further questioned the decision of police officers to call for a hearse rather than an ambulance to transport her brother to the hospital.

The sister, who remained in shock over Rajin’s death, described him as a quiet and kind person.
