Man battered by mob near city courts

A man was rescued by public-spirited citizens from being bludgeoned by a gang of men near the city magistrate­s’ courts on Thursday.

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) yesterday said that the attack occurred around 1.30 pm at the Avenue of the Republic in the vicinity of the Georgetown Magistrate­s’ Courts, where Randolph McAdam, 43, of no fixed place of abode, was beaten by a group of men.

The police said that the man was picketing over not paid by his employer, who is a gold miner. During this time, the group of men approached and started abusing the man.

In a video circulatin­g on social media, this newspaper observed that McAdams, who is holding an object, was surrounded by the men, who also had objects in their hands. As the man continues talking one of the men pelts him and then McAdam runs in the eastern direction, crossing the road but he is followed by the men who used the objects in their hands to hit him man after they surrounded him. One of the men also had a board which was used to assault the man. Persons could also be seen trying to drive along the road where the man was being beaten.

After the men run away when persons start intervenin­g, McAdam is seen lying motionless on the road with his head in a pool of blood. According to the police, McAdam was aided by public-spirited citizens before he went to the Brickdam Police Station and made a report of the beating. He was escorted to the Police Medical Centre, where he was examined by the police surgeon who issued a medical certificat­e.

The police said that one of the suspects, called ‘Oscar’ and a gang of others, escaped and the police have not apprehende­d them as yet. Investigat­ions are in progress, the police stated.
